MUSIC: SMOKE & FLOWERS
Smoke & Flowers is two girls who probably grew up getting yelled at for daydreaming in piano class. Brooklyn residents Jeanann Dara and Marisol Limon make music that reveals a deep respect for classical arrangements, but also a playful curiosity with modernity and all its loops & sampling. Musically, they sound a bit like Andrew Bird’s complicated symphonies, mixed in with a bit of Victoria Legrand’s throaty vocals, and maybe some downtempo Tom Tom Club dance beats thrown in to liven things up a bit. In their own words, they “explore the boundaries of romance and reality that could be described as electronic chamber pop.” Listen for yourself at their Bandcamp page and check ‘em out in the Lower East Side next week along with The Shills, Honeychild Vs The ReAver, and Inyang Bassey at our first Arlene’s Grocery event on June 14th, 8 p.m., 21+, $8 cover at the door.
